History of Needham

Needham, MA, was developed in the 1960s and hosted a farming community. By 1710, Needham relied primarily on agriculture, grazing, lumber, and tanneries for its economy. Eventually, saw and grist mills opened along the Charles River and, soon after, the extension of the rail increased Needham’s population. Needham became most notable for their fine knitwear when the William Carter Company and other knitters relocated to Needham. It wasn’t until the construction of Route 128 that an electronic industrial boom began. By 1950, Needham was one of the first towns to have an industrial park. This increase in business led to an increase in the public works sector and also included an improvement in the school system, making Needham a desirable family suburb of Boston.
