Downtown Crossing Specialty Stores in Boston

There is a diverse selection of retail stores in Downtown Crossing. The most notable is Macy’s Department Store; however, the area is also home to several discount stores, including DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse, HomeGoods, and Marshalls.

All My Sons suggests you stop at the infamous Brattle Book Shop. Established in 1825, it is one of America’s oldest and largest used antique book stores. The currency proprietor is Kenneth Gloss. He appraises books and libraries for Harvard, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, Simmons, Suffolk, Tufts, Babson, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and the FBI. He also was the past president of American’s New England Chapter of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association.

If you are looking to sell your rare books, give Brattle Book Shop a call. Brattle Book specializes in complete appraisal services for estate, tax, and donation purposes. They will travel to you to purchase books from large estates and will even buy single volumes. If you prefer, you can take a clear photo, write a description, add your contact information, and email this to the shop. They are not interested in Reader’s Digest condensed books, textbooks, romance novels, books with missing covers, highlighting or notes (unless from someone conspicuous), water-damaged, moldy, missing pages, new books, or encyclopedias after 1911. With this in mind, however, if you think you may have something special, Brattle Book will gladly evaluate the value based on the condition, scarcity, demand, and rarity of the book.

Another unique service Brattle Book offers is decorating private shelves. If you are looking to create your own library but are unsure what to buy, Brattle Book has a wide selection to make your vision a reality. They offer leather, cloth, and decorative bindings, in addition to general hardcovers, bargain books, Franklin & Easton, and oversized art books.

Downtown Crossing Hotels

Suppose you want to get a feel before moving to Downtown Crossing. In that case, our local Boston movers suggest staying at the Hyatt Regency Boston Hotel or Club Quarters Hotel in Boston, Faneuil Hall. Both hotels are located in the center of Downtown Boston, making them a convenient choice for your stay.

The Hyatt Regency Boston Hotel is near a cornucopia of attractions, restaurants, the Theater District, and Chinatown. Amenities include free internet access, a restaurant on-site (the Avenue One & Lobby Bar), room service, and a fitness center. It’s also pet-friendly, provides digital keys and check-in, and offers business, laundry, and concierge services. The rooms are gorgeous, with living areas containing contemporary furnishings, luxury bedding, and 55” HDTVs.

Club Quarters Hotel in Boston, Faneuil Hall, is within walking distance to the waterfront, the Government Center, and the North End. They offer rooms and suites as well as extended stays for longer trips. Their Club Living Room is a private lounge offered to guests, so they can work, relax or socialize. This space offers Wi-Fi, wireless printing, and computer stations that support both Mac and PC. One differentiating factor is Club Quarters is dog friendly. You can bring up to two dogs, up to 50 pounds each, at no extra cost. Lastly, Club Quarters has a fitness center open from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily.

Downtown Crossing Restaurants

Definitely stop by Sam LaGrassa’s when in Downtown Crossing. Founded in 1968, it is one of the largest lunch operations in Boston. All meats are prepared in-house and served fresh daily, and sauces and dressing are made from scratch. They also offer daily specials and are open Monday through Friday.

If you have a sweet tooth, Insomnia Cookies is another favorite. They serve “wiches” (two cookies between ice cream), brownies, cookies, ice cream, and also cookie and brownie cakes. What makes it fun is everything can be served with milk. Their cookie flavors are immense: chocolate peanut butter cup, triple chocolate, salted caramel, confetti deluxe, oatmeal chocolate walnut, s’more, and more!

The last hidden gem is Yvonne's, which offers dinner, dessert, cocktail, and wine menus and is open for dinner seven days a week. Yvonne’s is divided into several spaces. The Supper Club space has antique crystal chandeliers, tufted sofas, white-linen tablecloths, and marble floors. Anchoring the space is Locke-Ober's original Santo Domingo mahogany bar, a hand-carved on-site French piece dating back to 1886. The Lounge is adjacent to the dining room and has a tin ceiling with opulent furnishings, which is perfect for cocktail parties. The Library is surrounded by bookshelves and has stunning herringbone wood floors. It is a dining area that has a blend of refined elegance mixed with feisty modern furnishings. Hidden away from the boisterous main floor, the Gallery is located beneath the Library. The entrance is even concealed behind a secret bookshelf! Upon entering, you will notice its playful pop culture decor and the perfect spot for a photo opp! It is truly an exclusive and intimate experience with a mere seven tables, so make your reservations early.
