What is Brockton, MA, Famous For?

As a residential Boston moving company, we’re a bit biased when it comes to the best places in Massachusetts. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the rest of the amazing cities that spatter this great state. Here are a few things Brockton, MA, is known for.

Santa

Our movers in Brockton, MA, have a holly, jolly spirit. Come December, the community gets incredibly festive. There’s a long history of Santa-themed accolades in Brockton. The first mall Santa in the United States appeared in 1890 at Brockton’s Edgar’s Department Store. And in 2011, Brockton broke a world record for Santa Hat wearers in one place at one time, with 1792 people in Brockton’s downtown area.

Electricity

Brockton is the birthplace of one of Thomas Edison’s major compounding inventions, the three-wire underground electrical system. Edison’s innovation sparked the first electrically operated fire station, and eventually the first theatre tied to an electrical circuit in the world. This paved the way for the modern-day movie theatres we enjoy today.

Cape Verde

The Republic of Cabo Verde is a small chain of volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa. A former state under the control of Portugal, Cape Verde won its independence in July of 1975.  Coincidentally, Brockton has the largest population of Cape Verdeans in the United States. Brockton plays host to the Cape Verdean festival every July.

Famous People From Brockton, MA

Aside the amazing feats that have been accomplished in Brockton, many incredible people have grown up within the Brockton city limits. Check out these individuals that rose about their station to do great things in their respective communities and achieve a status of greatness.

Rocky Marciano

One of the most decorated boxers of all time, Rocky Marciano has been built as the emblem of Brockton, even going by the nicknames, “The Brockton Blockbuster” and “The Rock from Brockton”. In his nine-year career in the ring, Marciano finished with an undefeated record of 49-0, holding the world heavyweight title from 1952 until his retirement in 1955. Before taking up a serious career in boxing, Marciano worked as a ditch digger and a shoemaker, exemplifying the grit and resilience that later inspired the highly successful movie franchise about the fictional boxer, Rocky Balboa.

Al Davis

“Just Win, Baby!” As one of the main reasons Brockton is known as the “City of Champions”, Al Davis is among the true influential figures in the history of the National Football League. Davis is the only person in history to serve as an assistant coach, head coach, general manager, commissioner, and owner of a team. He was an active leader of civil rights in the NFL, hiring both the first African-American head coach and female executive in league history. He won three Super Bowls as the owner of the Oakland Raiders and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

Shawn Fanning

Brockton has a thing for revolutionaries. While he isn’t the household name he very well could’ve turned into, Shawn Fanning changed the music business – for better or worse. A co-founder of the music file-sharing software, Napster, Fanning rode a huge wave at the turn of the 21st century as one of the first mass marketplaces for MP3s. After numerous high-profile lawsuits were filed – including motions from Metallica and Jay-Z – Napster had to shut down operations. Don’t worry though, Fanning made out alright; his estimated net worth is over $100 million.
