The History of Kenedy

It was in 1886 when Mifflin Kenedy bought this land in anticipation for the soon to arrive San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad. The city, of course, was later named after Kenedy, who became “chief benefactor of the SAAP railroad.” One year later in 1887, the name Kenedy Junction was applied, but the name shortened just three months later.¹

Fast forward many years later to 1910, when Kenedy incorporated as a town with a population of 1,147 people. Kenedy was known as a “six-shooter town.” This was a phrase used when salon patrons saluted passing trains or showed off their wealth by wasting ammunition. As the years when on, Kenedy began to grow. In 1915, there was a hot mineral water discovery near the railroad station. This gave the town an economic boost and held the claim as one of the largest cotton compresses in Texas.¹

Today though, our community of Kenedy remains small but sticks true to the history of what has made our town grow. We have remained a tight-knit group of residents and are always welcoming people who come to visit or new residents who call Kenedy home.
