Making Friends In Your New Neighborhood
You have just moved into a new neighborhood. Your Maryland movers have helped you with the unpacking process and you are almost completely settled in. However, you aren’t sure how to go about making friends in your new neighborhood. It can be difficult, since everyone probably already knows each other and you are likely the one on the outside looking in. There are some things you can do to make finding friends easier.
This sounds obvious, but many people feel uncomfortable with approaching others. Your new neighbors may be feeling just as shy as you are. If you see one of your neighbors outside, approach them and introduce yourself. Ask them what their name is and if they have any kids. The more you talk, the more likely you will be to find common interests. When you get home, write down their names so that you can memorize them more easily.
Join A Class
A great way to meet new people is to enroll in a class. Whether it’s a class at the local community college or a class at a local church, this will give you the opportunity to meet people and make new friends. You could also join a group for people with the same hobbies as you. For example, if you love scrapbooking, consider looking for a local scrapbooking group.
If the weather is nice, make a point to be outside for a couple hours each day. Staying inside and watching television will prevent you from meeting anyone new. If you have children, take them outside in the front yard and play. If you don’t have children, consider getting a glass of iced tea and sit out on your front porch. This way, you will be more likely to see people outside so that you can approach them, as mentioned above.
Ask For A Cup Of Sugar
Sometimes it’s hard to find people outside, especially during the cold winter months. If this is the case, consider knocking on your next door neighbor’s door to borrow a cup of sugar. When they answer the door, introduce yourself, explain that you’re new to the neighborhood, and ask if they have a cup of sugar. This can spark a conversation that leads to a friendship.
Once you have met a couple new people, consider inviting them over for dinner. If they are going through a hard time, consider bringing them dinner or even just a card. Make it known that you are there if they ever need to talk. Make sure that you make yourself approachable, so that people know that you are there for them. Reaching out is a great way to make new friends who last for a long time. Also, they will be much more likely to return the favor if you ever find yourself in need.
Making friends can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. As soon as your Maryland movers have moved all of your belongings, go outside and introduce yourself to your new neighbors. They are likely friendly people who you can have a great friendship with. You will never know unless you try!
