The Golden Gamble was Denver’s moniker in the mid-to-late 19th century. An estimated 100,000 people rushed into Colorado between 1858 and 1860. Only one out of three found Colorado worthwhile, because in 1860, the census taker found only 34,277 residents. For more about Denver’s history and the gold rush that put it on the map.

One of the best-known names from Colorado’s history: Wild Buffalo Bill

Born: February 26, 1846

Died: January 10, 1917

Remember Annie Get Your Gun? Remember Annie Oakley? Now do you remember where you heard about this illustrious character? William Frederick Cody, known as Buffalo Bill, was a Colorado buffalo hunter, U.S. army scout, and an Indian fighter. But he is probably best known as the man who gave the Wild West its name. He produced a colorful show called Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World, which had an international reputation and helped create a lasting image of the American West. That image would become a “draw,” influencing thousands of families to move to Denver. Buffalo Bill was a major contributor in the creation of the myth of the American West, as seen in Hollywood movies, on the musical stage and on television.

William F. Cody, after he became Buffalo Bill, thanks to dime novels of the time, was "on stage" much of the rest of his life. He became the character portrayed in those dime novels.

His most famous stage presence came during his appearances all over the world with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. For over 30 years it captivated audiences at home and abroad and did much to popularize the west and interest people in traveling and settling in the “wild, wild west,” and particularly in moving to Denver and other parts of Colorado.
