A New Home for the Season of Fresh Starts

The flowers are beginning to bloom and All My Sons Moving & Storage wants to celebrate the coming of spring with you. As the experts in residential moving and apartment moving, we know sometimes the warmer weather comes with a new home or a new lease.

Allow us to share the best items to pack for a spring move and what order to pack them in.

Non-Essentials to Start Packing for the Spring Move

The first items you should pack for any move should be the items you won’t immediately miss if they sit in a box for a while. These items are the non-essentials. While they make life brighter and more joyful, they often aren’t necessary for daily functional living. At least not during your springtime move.

Here are the items to pack for your spring move first.

  • Winter and Summer ClothesWith the turning of the seasons, your bulky jackets, heavy winter pants, and gloves are safe to pack. Likewise, your light summer clothing and swimsuits are probably not going to need to come out again until a few months after the move.

  • Holiday Decorations: Hopefully these items have already made it back into their regular storage boxes by now. Check that the boxes are not damaged, and declare them ready to move.

  • Collectibles and Keepsakes: These items also might already be in boxes in the back closets unless you keep them on display.

  • Extra Blankets, Towels, and Sheets: Set aside the items you need to make it through the next week before your move, and then pack any extras you keep on hand.

  • BooksEverything but your current reads can be packed into a box.

  • Physical Media Collections:  CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays and vinyl records can be packed if you don’t anticipate using the media items before your move.

  • Photo Albums: Pack these with the books and the media collections.

  • Décor and ArtworkAfter you raid the back closets, you should look to the items you keep on display.

Essentials to Pack Last for the Spring Move

Essentials to Pack Last for the Spring Move

These next items should go into essentials boxes. These boxes are packed and loaded onto your moving truck LAST to be unloaded and unpacked FIRST.

When you separate this items to unpack at your new home first, you can make daily, functional living possible from your first night.

  • Bed Sheets and Pillow: One set of bed sheets and a pillow for every member of your household. Make the beds as soon as the beds are assembled, and you can have a restful first night in the new home.

  • Kitchen Utensils, Dishes, and Glassware: Put your new kitchen to work with your first kitchen essentials box.

  • Napkins or Paper Towels: Have these on hand to clean up spills post-move.

  • Toilet Paper: The new bathroom really isn’t usable without it.

  • Soap: Seal bars or pack liquid hand soap in your essentials boxes.

  • Bathroom TowelsAt least one bath towel and one set of hand towels.

  • Shower Curtain: Typically not included in homes with a tub/shower combo.

  • Cleaning Supplies: Get a head start on your spring cleaning by packing the vacuum, mop, and multi-surface cleaner with your essentials.

Pack on Your Person During Your Spring Move

Some items should not go into your moving truck during your spring move. These items should be on your person at all times in a bag you will carry during the move

Whether your move is local or long-distance, having these items directly on hand will make your life easier or will help in navigating an emergency.

  • Medications: If you need it to function, thrive, or survive, do not pack it into a box. Carry both daily medications and medicines you need in the event of a medical emergency.

  • Toiletries: In case of an overnight stay during a long-distance move or moving fatigue that prevents you from unloading your bathroom essentials boxes, keep toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, a hairbrush, and some soap with you.

  • Spring Clothing and Shoes: Wear a weather-appropriate outfit and keep an extra set of clothes on hand for every day you will be in transition during the spring move.

  • Phone Charger: Don’t get caught with a dead phone. Carry a charger, a car charger, or a power bank.

  • Book or Tablet: You may have some downtime if you have hired licensed and insured professional movers, or you may decide to call it a night early before you’ve unpacked your television. Bring something to entertain yourself with.

  • First Aid Kit: In case of cuts, scrapes, or other moving injuries.

  • Water Bottles and Snacks: The temperature is rising, be sure to stay hydrated and curb the moving munchies.

  • Important Documents: Government IDs and rental contracts.

  • Boxcutter: You will arrive at your new space with an army of taped-shut boxes. Pack something that you can open them with.
