How Long Should My Local Move Take?

Make an estimate for how long your move will take with data from real All My Sons Moving & Storage moves.

As you prepare for a local move, whether you’re going the do-it-yourself route or hiring professional movers, an estimate of how long your move could take will help you plan your day and keep your budget on track. Your move, of course, will be as unique as you are. There is no simple formula for creating a moving time estimate, but you can use this resource from All My Sons to help you get started.

All My Sons Moving & Storage pulled the data from roughly 225,000 local moves performed at almost 100 different locations throughout 2025. We calculated the average moving time for different moves based on home size. While All My Sons performs many different types of moves, including enterprise-scale commercial moves and long-distance moves, only local moves (going less than 35 miles) were counted in this report.

These results could prove useful when you’re planning your own move.

Factors that Impact Moving Time

As you create your moving time estimate, there are a few important factors you should take into consideration. All of these components will have an impact on your final time.

  • Size of Your Home: The most obvious factor is how much you have to move. More rooms means more items. If you’re moving from one studio apartment to another, then your home is more easily packed up than someone moving from one three-bedroom home to another.

  • Distance of Your Move: When the truck is loaded, the travel time between your old home and your next home should be counted as well. If you need to make additional stops during your move, such as at a storage unit, that will add further time.

  • Number and Type of Belongings: More items means more time needed to move, but if any items in your household require special attention like antique furniture, pianos, or big flat screen televisions then that will also add to your final moving time. If you pack for a move without boxes and use different household items such as trash bags and laundry baskets to carry your belongings, then your move will take more time than if you had packed with uniform moving boxes.

  • Logistics of Transport: Stairs, elevators, tight doorways, and the availability of parking for your moving truck will all add additional minutes to your moving time. While a studio apartment move might involve fewer items, it could take longer than a 3-Bedroom home move if there are complex logistics like limited parking and narrow stairwells.

  • Number of Helpers: The more help you have, the quicker your move could be. But hiring professional movers could also speed up your move, as a rag-tag group of friends and family might not work as fast as two well-trained pro movers.

  • Weather Conditions: If adverse weather conditions do not stop your move altogether, they will still slow down your move. Moving during summer might call for sufficient breaks to rehydrate and avoid heat exhaustion. Packing a truck in the rain will call for careful protection of your belongings. Ice on roads will mean additional driving time.

How Do I Complete My Move Faster?

If you’re aiming to keep a move within a strict budget, you might wonder how you can get your move done faster. There might not be anything you can do to reduce travel time or change logistics about your old or new home, but there are certainly a few things you can do to make your move quicker.

These tips can help you save time during your move.

  • Plan Ahead: A well-organized move can happen in record time while the move you throw together last-minute might face setbacks and challenges. Start planning your move well ahead of your official move date by creating a moving checklist, investigating the logistical challenges at your old or new home, and scheduling your moving services well in advance.

  • Declutter and Downsize: The fewer items to pack and move, the faster your move will get done. Sort through all your belongings prior to your move and think critically about what you have space for and what fits in your new life. Host a garage sale, donate usable items in good condition, or call Junk.com to dispose of bulk unwanted junk.

  • Pack Efficiently: Start by packing non-essentials like off-season clothing, media collections, and décor items. Pack essentials like kitchen utensils, bedsheets, and toilet paper in separate boxes LAST to be unloaded at your destination FIRST. Use sturdy, high-quality packing materials and uniform moving boxes.

  • Hire Professionals: While your friends and family might be ready and willing to assist, hiring people who move others for a living could significantly expedite your move, not to mention save you a lot of stress and headache.
