Packing Your Music Collection

The moving experts offering professional packing services at All My Sons Moving & Storage offer steps to packing vinyl records.

Vinyl might have the best quality sound, but it comes at a cost. Records are susceptible to scratches or warping when you pack them for a move or put them into storage for a while. Protect your precious music collection by carefully packing your vinyl records with the steps below.

Step 1: Use Small Boxes

Records add up in weight very quickly and you don’t want them to shift around too much during transit, so you should use the smallest box that can comfortably accommodate them.

Step 2: Line Your Boxes with Bubble Wrap

To help protect your records and add some shock-absorption to your boxes, line the interior of the small box with bubble wrap before you place any records inside.

Step 3: Pack Records Vertically

To avoid bending or warping your records, you should pack your records so that they sit on their side and always keep your boxes upright during the move or storage.

Protect your records by keeping them inside their sleeves during the move. If you do not have the record’s original sleeve or if the original sleeve is too damaged you can buy replacement sleeves from Sleeve City or Big Fudge Vinyl.

Step 4: Pack Tightly and Fill Empty Space

Pack your records box with as many records as can comfortably fit. When no more records can fit or you run out of records, make certain any empty space in your box is filled with packing material like bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or packing paper. When you lift the records box, you should not feel the records shifting around inside. If you do, pack the box even tighter before you seal it.

Step 5: Label Your Boxes as Fragile

Seal your boxes well and label them as fragile to ensure you and your movers remember to treat them with care. You might want to put an arrow on your box to make sure you remember to always keep the box upright.

If your records are going into storage, they should be stored in climate-controlled storage as extreme temperatures could cause your records to warp.

Records Packed for the Move

With tightly packed small boxes you can keep your records safe during transit. Enjoy unpacking your music collection at your new home and listening to your beautiful records for decades to come.
