Making Your Move in Rain, Sleet, or Shine

All My Sons Moving & Storage helps households, individuals, and businesses get relocated, sometimes even when there’s unexpected weather.

If you see serious storms or scorching heat brewing on the forecast, then you might be afraid that your move is headed for trouble. Remain calm, professional movers like All My Sons Moving & Storage know a few tips and tricks for how to navigate all kinds of moving challenges, including bad weather.

If you are moving yourself or moving with a licensed and insured moving company, these are some of the steps you and your movers should take to ensure a smooth transition to your new home in inclement weather conditions.

1. Dress Appropriately for the Weather

Summer moves call for lightweight, protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen, but if you’re moving during a rainstorm or a snow storm then you might want to dress a little warmer.

When preparing to move in the rain, you and your movers should wear waterproof rain jackets and slip-resistant shoes. Carry extra umbrellas for protecting movers as they pass back and forth.

In the cold, layer up. Wear gloves, hats, and insulated boots.

2. Pack in Waterproof Containers

Cardboard will break down and leak when faced with a downpour. If the rain is light, you might be able to sneak your boxes into the truck and back out again without much damage. When heavy rain threatens, look to pack in the most weather-resistant containers possible. Leakproof plastic storage bins will help protect your most fragile belongings like electronics, collectibles, and clothing.

3. Use Coverings to Keep Items Dry

Furniture should be wrapped in furniture pads and plastic wrap to protect them during the move. This should also help keep the items from getting water-damaged if there is rain or snow happening.

Boxes and bins can be covered with towels, tarps, or rain ponchos to help keep them dry during transition to and from the moving truck.

You can also lay towels and tarps down on the floors of your new home to prevent movers from tracking too much mud or snow into your new home.

4. Clear Pathways of Ice and Snow

If there is ice or snow on the ground during your move, take a moment before loading and unloading to clear pathways with a winter shovel. Get some sand and salt to help keep ice melted and slippery slopes passable.

Look for potential hazard-spots before loading or unloading like steep, ice-covered driveways, or staircases. Advise movers to be careful in these spots or find an alternative route to load and unload.

5. Prepare to be Flexible

Moving in inclement weather might call for patience. There could be a particularly aggressive storm cell that you and your movers will have to wait out. Traversing icy or rainy conditions will likely add extra time to your estimate on how long your move will take

Sometimes, in extremely adverse conditions or when roads become impassable, even professional movers will need to take a step back. Keep in close contact with your professional movers to stay informed about the status of your move, and be prepared to be flexible.

Make sure you always have an essentials and emergencies bag with you in case you have to wait for movers to reschedule. In addition to items that make your move easier like rental contracts, a boxcutter, medications, and overnight toiletries, you should also pack items you need in case of a power outage like a flashlight, extra batteries, and snacks.
