Adjusting to Different Cultures in a New City

When you have to move to a place where the culture is entirely different, things can get intimidating really quickly. Everyone is used to the way they were raised, and being uprooted from that and thrown into a different way of life can be hard to get used to. For example, there are some places where flip flops are never worn, while on the other hand there are places where flip flops are worn every day. Although this might not seem like that big of a deal, when you are used to people always wearing flip flops it can become a sort of comfort. There are some things that you can do when you move to an area with a different culture, and many of them are easier than you would think.

It is always important to respect other people’s cultures and ways of life. Disrespecting someone’s culture is one of the biggest slaps across the face that you can give someone. In the north east, things are very fast paced, and something is always going on. Whereas in the south one of the greatest things to do is sit on a rocking chair on the back porch with some friends and talk until the wee hours of the morning. For a northerner this might seem like a waste of time, but for a southerner this is a way of life. Being gracious and accepting of all cultures is a good quality to have.

Another thing that is important is to do research. Before you move to wherever you are moving, look up some local blogs about the culture. This will give you a little bit of an edge when it comes time to make your move. When you’re used to the southern hospitality of the south, and you move out west where the hospitality is not innate, you are going to be shell shocked. Doing this research will help take away some of that stress.

One resource that you might have overlooked is your friends. Do you have friends in the area that you are moving to? Do you have friends that have been to the area that you are moving to? They might have some knowledge of the area that you don’t have, which could make things easier.

Once you surround yourself with positive people that make your life better, everything else will just flow. At first the adjustment to a different way of life may be a little rocky, but friends can make everything a lot better. And if they can’t make it better, at least you don’t have to go at it alone.
