How to Pack a TV for a Move

Your TV provides hours of fun entertainment, and you might even want to have it on and running an old favorite show while you pack up the rest of your household inventory for your move. At some point though, the television needs to go in a box if it’s coming with you. While flat-screen TVs are significantly easier to move than their bulked up ancestors, they are still a challenge to pack and move.

First thing, no more Netflix and pack. Power off and unplug the TV. If you have a complex entertainment set-up with cords going to the Nintendo Switch, the sound system, and the ancient VCR that miraculously still works, then be sure to take a few pictures of where all the cords went before you disconnect everything. Wrap cables, put them in a clear bag, and label the bag so that you remember which cord belonged to which machine.

If your TV has legs or a stand that detaches, remove them now and be sure to pack the hardware in a bag with the other cables and TV accessories. For wall-mounted TVs, enlist an assistant to help hold the TV while you unscrew the security screws, lift the TV off the mount, and gently rest the TV on the floor.

Now is a great time to gently wipe dust and fingerprints off your TV screen with a microfiber cloth. You can also dust vents with a can of compressed air.

Cover your TV screen with a screen cover or bubble wrap to ensure the screen does not get scratched.

Have the original box and packaging material for your TV lying in a closet somewhere? Huzzah, you knew you would need it again! This packaging was designed to fit your specific TV and keep it safe, so you can repackage that TV back in its original box and proceed to step 3.

Is that box long gone? We hope you recycled. Don’t fret, plenty of retailers that sell moving supplies (Like All My Sons Moving & Storage!) also carry specialty TV boxes designed to fit a wide range of screen sizes. Measure your TV screen diagonally and look for a box designed to accommodate that screen size. 

If you are unable to put your TV in a box, wrap the TV in bubble wrap and furniture pads to help protect the screen during transit.

Once your TV is inside its appropriate box, check to make sure the TV is not shifting when you wiggle the box. Get some additional packing paper or bubble wrap to help cushion the TV so that it does not move around inside the box. 

If your TV is going to be in the moving truck for several hours to several days or if your TV is going into storage, it might be a good idea to pack silica gel packets in with the extra packing material to help protect the delicate components from moisture damage. 

Seal up your TV box with packing tape and label the box. You should mark the box as fragile so that you and your movers remember to handle it with care and you should add an arrow pointing to the top of the TV box to help you remember to keep it upright. You should not lay the TV flat or on its side for extended periods of time, as this puts stress on components not intended to withstand prolonged pressure.

Always carry your TV oriented upright. For large TVs, make sure you have a helper to carry the TV with you.

If you have hired professional movers, they will likely secure the TV between two stable flat objects in the moving truck, always in the upright position. The TV can also be tied to the truck’s interior wall with the screen facing the inside of the truck.
