 A good night’s sleep is priceless, but a great mattress often costs a pretty penny. If you have determined that you’re going to protect your investment for a little longer, then the mattress is probably coming with you on your local or long-distance move.

Get your mattress safely to your destination by following these steps for packing a mattress.

Before you move the mattress, determine if it’s more cost-effective to replace the mattress at your destination rather than attempt to move it. Mattresses can last up to ten years depending on the material. Check your original receipts and warranties and see if the manufacturer listed a specific timeframe for your mattress.

Some signs that your mattress definitely needs replacing include the following.

• Sagging or Permanent Depressions: Your spring-coil or memory foam mattress used to snap back into shape soon after you got up. Now it seems like there’s a ditch in your mattress that never goes away.

• Stains or Odors: Mattress smelling a little funky or some yellowish stains creeping across the fabric cover? Over time, your mattress absorbs dirt and body oil and there comes a point when cleaning the surface just isn’t going to cut it anymore.

• Body Aches When You Get Up: A good night’s sleep and adequate support become even more important as we age. If you are getting up in the morning with aches and pains that just get worse after you lie down, then the mattress might be the problem.

Your mattress is in good shape and has a few years of life left in it. Now you should identify how large your mattress is. There are standard dimensions for mattresses, Twin, Full, Queen, and King, but yours might be a few inches or centimeters off.

Getting the dimensions of your mattress will help you find the right supplies to move your mattress.

You can find mattress bags in most standard sizes wherever packing supplies are sold. Before you put the mattress away in its appropriate mattress bag, make sure to clean your mattress thoroughly. This step is especially important if your mattress is going into storage for any length of time as a dirty mattress will attract pests and encourage the growth of mold or mildew in a dark storage unit for an indefinite period of time.

Once the mattress is clean and dry, slip the mattress bag around its body. You might need a helper to perform this step if the mattress is Queen-sized or larger.

Fold the open end of the mattress bag over and seal it closed with packing tape. Make sure the bag is securely around the mattress and there is little slack in the plastic. If the bag is too large, fold the excess plastic and tape it in place for a snug fit.

You and your helper should transport the mattress on its side edge for easier navigation. Once the mattress is in the truck or storage unit, you can set the mattress on its side and secure it to the wall with tie-down straps, also typically available wherever moving supplies are sold.

When you reach your destination, the mattress should come out with the rest of the essentials. Set up your bed as soon as possible for a great night’s sleep at your new home.
