Before You Leave Your Old Home

All My Sons Moving & Storage offers white-glove professional moving service nationwide, local or long-distance

The boxes are sealed, the moving truck is full, and you’re almost ready to drive away. Before you go, there are a few tasks you should aim to complete to ensure everything is in order for you to leave.

As you’re wrapping up the packing and loading at your next move, here are the final items you should check off your moving checklist as you get ready to leave your old home behind.

1. Ensure Essentials are Packed and Accessible to You

The last items to pack are the ones you’ll use right up until the moment of your move and then need almost immediately after you reach your new home. These essentials will either go into boxes that you will put on the truck LAST to be unloaded FIRST or into a bag that you carry with you during the move.

Ensure your bag holds all the things you need to complete your move like rental contracts, wallet and keys, and a boxcutter to open your legion of boxes when you reach your destination.

2. Check All Closets, Cabinets, and Cupboards

Now that the packed boxes are clearing out, you should see empty floor space and walls. Before you declare the truck loaded, open all the cabinets, closets, and cupboards in your old home to check for any stowaways.

Physically open and check every nook and cranny if you did not do so while packing.

Forgotten items will become the next tenant’s problem, so be kind to the people who’ll move into the home after you and don’t leave them gifts they don’t want.

3. Do a Thorough Move Out Cleaning

Hopefully you kept a fair stash of cleaning supplies with your essentials. As your old place’s rooms empty out, vacuum floors, scrub surfaces, and pick up debris. Take out the trash, and make all the surfaces shine.

If you are hiring a service to do the move-out cleaning, let them know the home is vacated and ready to clean as soon as you close up your truck.

4. Final Walkthrough of Old Home

Some landlords and property managers will want renters to do a final walkthrough of the old house or apartment before signing off on returning deposits. If you took pictures or did an inventory of the rental before you moved in, then reference it to note any damage that existed before you arrived. Even if your landlord does not require you to be present for the final walkthrough, you should do one yourself before you leave.

5. Hand Off Old Home’s Keys

Renters will need to turn keys back in to the property manager. Even if your home’s next tenants or owners are changing the locks, you should gather up any keys you own and any spares you’ve given to others prior to moving out.

Once you have all the keys back, turn them in, hand them off, or have them disposed of properly depending on what your move-out calls for.

Ready for the Drive to the New Home

With these final tasks complete, you’ll be able to drive off to your next home. Commence unpacking and start updating your address with all the companies and individuals you care about.
