The boxes are sealed, the moving truck is full, and you’re almost ready to drive away. Before you go, there are a few tasks you should aim to complete to ensure everything is in order for you to leave.

As you’re wrapping up the packing and loading at your next move, here are the final items you should check off your moving checklist as you get ready to leave your old home behind.

The last items to pack are the ones you’ll use right up until the moment of your move and then need almost immediately after you reach your new home. Physically open and check every nook and cranny if you did not do so while packing. 

Forgotten items will become the next tenant’s problem, so be kind to the people who’ll move into the home after you and don’t leave them gifts they don’t want.

Hopefully you kept a fair stash of cleaning supplies with your essentials. As your old place’s rooms empty out, vacuum floors, scrub surfaces, and pick up debris. Take out the trash, and make all the surfaces shine.

If you are hiring a service to do the move-out cleaning, let them know the home is vacated and ready to clean as soon as you close up your truck.

Some landlords and property managers will want renters to do a final walkthrough of the old house or apartment before signing off on returning deposits. If you took pictures or did an inventory of the rental before you moved in, then reference it to note any damage that existed before you arrived. Even if your landlord does not require you to be present for the final walkthrough, you should do one yourself before you leave.
