Preparing for Dorm Life

Dorms are generally small, and space is limited. Some dorms are only equipped with a bed and desk, so our first piece of advice is don’t try and pack your bedroom back at home into the new dorm you’re about to move into. Once you have been accepted into the college of your dreams and apply for the dorm room, our Louisiana movers recommend starting prepping for dorm life as soon as possible! Below is a guide and checklist to follow to help make your moving college experience easier.

Kitchen Necessities

Having a small mini fridge or microwave are two good items to invest in. Don’t go overboard by buying other items, such as pots and pans or toaster ovens. Remember, space is limited in your room. Our Louisiana movers also recommend:

  • Coffee pots
  • Ramen
  • Reusable plates and bowls
  • Trash bags
  • Snacks
  • Disinfecting wipes and spray
  • Cups and mugs
  • Paper plates
  • Plastic cutlery
  • Paper towels

Inspections

Make sure to search the dorm room before you officially move in. Possible scratches or stained carpets can already exist. Go through the whole room thoroughly with your child. If you do not note something to the room adviser, you can possibly be billed later for damages when you move out at the end of the semester for things you didn’t do.

Essentials

When we say words essentials, we do mean toothbrush, shampoo, clothes, and medicines, but we also want to expand on the word a little more. An essential before you move to Baton Rouge is hiring a professional moving company. There will be a lot of items you will need to carry back and forth, it will become exhausting very fast. You can focus on setting up the dorm instead or going with your child to sign the paperwork for their dorm. Our Louisiana movers can work fast and get the job done in a proficient manner. We can ship items before you leave so they will be ready when you arrive.

Reminders of Home Life

College life can be hard, and you will start to miss your loved ones back at home. Our Louisiana movers want to remind you to bring photos of your friends and family back home. Decorate a cork board with all the things you love most at being at home before you move to Baton Rouge. We also suggest buying a soft blanket. Cuddling up to something soft at night will be the replacement of your pet if you had one. If you didn’t have a pet a home, a soft blanket is also nice simply to feel safe and cozy in a new environment.

For many parents, moving your children into their new dorm is an emotional experience. All we’re saying is: don’t forget to pack a lot of tissues! Here at All My Sons, we understand that college is both an exciting and scary time. Save the stress and contact us to help you move your child into their dorm room.
