10 Things to Do Before Professional Movers Arrive

10 Things to Do Before Professional Movers Arrive

Moving to a new home involves a lot of planning and preparation before moving day and at times this can be an overwhelming process. Hiring professional movers will allow you to save time and effort with the heavy labor required, however there are necessary tasks that should be completed prior to the movers taking over. The Salt Lake City Movers at All My Sons Moving & Storage share with you 10 things you should do to prepare for the professional movers arrival. This will guarantee an efficient and successful move!

#1. Clean out the useless items

The first thing we suggest you doing in the moving process is to go through each room and get rid of items that you don’t need and that you won’t be transporting to your new home. Useless items become clutter and they will only get in the way. This should be done before you pack, and it will ultimately speed up the packing process.

#2. Create a Checklist with all items you will be transporting

There is no surprise that items can get misplaced and lost along the moving journey, so before the professional movers arrive, you must take inventory of everything you will be transporting to avoid not being able to file an insurance claim for damaged or missing items. Write everything down and we suggest you break it down room by room.

#3. Take photos of everything

While this may sound a little excessive, we suggest that you take as many photos of the items in your home as you can to be extra cautious during the moving journey. Professional movers understand how important your items are and you should be protected if damages occur.

#4. Designate one room for items you will be taking with you

There will be essential items that you won’t be transporting on the moving truck and you should set these aside to not confuse the professional movers. Make this easily identifiable with labels such as ‘do not pack and load’. These items will most likely be important documents and valuable items that you can’t afford for something to happen to them along with clothes and personal hygiene items you will need right away in your new home.

#5. Get rid of perishable items and plants

Unfortunately, moving companies will not be able to transport any plants or flowers and perishable items to your new home. You will need to clean out your refrigerator and throw away the perishable food items or donate them. This is the same for your plants.

#6. Prepare your large household appliances

When it comes to your larger appliances such as the refrigerator and washing machine, you should take note of the size, weight, and overall dimensions so that the movers will have this information ahead of time. Your larger items will greatly impact the type of moving truck that your move requires. Unplug all appliances before moving day and it doesn’t hurt to clean them out as well.

#7. Pre-pack small items

Group together small items in sealable bags so that they don’t get separated or lost along the way. Desk organizers and small souvenirs will only get in the way for the movers and it won’t be hard to pack them up yourself.

#8. Measure doors and prepare your furniture

This is a very important step to avoid moving-related injuries and it’s crucial to map out a safe exit route for your larger furniture items. By preparing ahead of time, the movers can come in and easily transport the furniture with your measurements.

#9. Plan for pets and kids

On moving day, you are not going to want any distractions that will slow down the process. Plan ahead for your pets to not be present that day or to be put in a cage. If possible, find a babysitter for your kids on the day of the move.

#10. Plan to be present on moving day

You will need to assist the movers with necessary information and directions so it’s crucial that you are available for the whole day to assist in the process.
