Minneapolis Public Schools' 2020 Changes

Moving is a huge life changing decision and if you already have a large family, the decision to pack up and move is not that simple. There are many factors to take into account when moving your family across state or out of state.

One of the major things to consider when moving is making sure that you move into a good school district for your children.  Luckily, Minneapolis Public Schools want your kids to succeed too!

Minneapolis Public School’s Board of Education recently passed a proposal called Acceleration 2020. This plan is essentially a roadmap to success and accelerates student achievement.

All My Sons of Minneapolis compiled a few key points from the MPS’s Acceleration 2020 plan and what that will mean for you and your children if you move to Minneapolis.

  1. The schools will be granted more control over management. Schools will be able to manage items, such as: curriculum, budget, staffing, and time which are normally micromanaged by the central office. The added freedom will allow each school to tailor their programs accordingly to meet the needs of the students.
  2. Funding will be student-based. Schools will no longer receive funding based on a uniform amount per student, instead the student’s individual needs will be taken into account in order to ensure that the accurate resources are available.
  3. New programs will be established to enforce behavior standard policies, increasing learning time, and focusing on inclusivity and literacy for students with special education services.
  4. Lastly, the implementation of a 5-8-10 scorecard. 5 is the percentage of annual increase in overall reading and math improvement among Minneapolis students. 8 is the percent of lowest-performing students’ annual increase in reading and math. And 10, is the percentage of annual increase in graduation rate.

To say the least, Minneapolis Public Schools are holding themselves to higher standards and believe that each of these goals are achievable. Although they are high targets to aim for, MPS is optimistic about every student. MPS’s overall goal is to transform Pre-K through 12th grade education for future success.

With everything that MPS has to offer you and your family, these four goals of the Acceleration 2020 proposal shows that MPS has a bright vision for the future.
