Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Moving Company

Planning a move can be stressful and challenging if you don’t get the right help or support from your movers. The Boise movers of All My Sons Moving and Storage discuss a few important questions to ask before hiring a moving company.

What Is the Total Cost for Services?

Before you settle on a moving company, one of the first things that crosses anyone’s mind has to do with the cost. A moving company can advertise a certain price for a service, but they will conveniently omit additional fees you may incur depending on your particular moving circumstances. For example, they may quote you one price, but when they realize you are moving into an apartment on the 20th floor of a building, they could increase the cost. One of the first questions to ask your movers is about the total cost of the move, including additional fees. Make sure the contract you sign represents the price both you and the moving company agreed on. If something is not clear in the contract, do not sign it until the moving company clarifies it for you. A reputable moving company will be completely transparent so you won’t be surprised by the cost of their moving services after your move.

Do You Have Liability Coverage or Protection Plan?

Before you hand over your most valuable household items, you need to be asking your moving company if they offer liability coverage for damaged or lost items. Whether you are moving down the street or across state lines, an accident can happen anywhere. Generally there are two different types of mover’s insurance plans you should ask your moving company about, including:

Full Value Protection: This insurance plan means your mover is liable for the replacement value of lost and damaged goods. This is more comprehensive movers’ insurance for your household items but it comes at a higher cost out of pocket.

Released Value Protection: Released value protection is a more economical plan compared to the full value protection plan. Under this coverage, the moving company is responsible for a small percentage based on the item’s weight. For example, “if your mover lost or damaged a 10-pound stereo component valued at $1,000, you would only receive $6.00 in compensation (60 cents x 10 pounds).”1

This is one of the most important questions to ask before hiring a moving company because the level of protection they offer is usually an indicator of the quality of their service. If they offer no liability coverage at all, that’s not a good sign.

Do You Offer Packing Services?

Before you pack up an entire house, ask your moving company if they offer a packing service. Our Boise packing service is available to all customers and is included in the full-service moving plan. However, many people also like to pack up themselves. A professional moving company will often offer customers moving packages that may or may not include a packing service. Make sure to clarify with your moving company so you don’t have to scramble to pack up last minute or overpay for a service you essentially didn’t need.

Are the Movers Always On Time?

No one likes delays and time is money. Before you hire a moving company, question the movers about their puntuality. Efficiency is key in a complex process such as a relocation. Another important question to ask before hiring a moving company is whether or not the movers are always on time. Professionals may give you a window instead of an exact time. Either way, if there’s an unforeseen circumstance that delays them, they should keep you informed. Don’t just ask the movers, though, ask the internet! Look for reviews and testimonials and ask friends who might have hired them in the past as well.

How Soon Can You Start?

Sometimes people need to be out of their house as of yesterday. An important question to ask before hiring a moving company, in this case, is their soonest availability for a last-minute move. Our local Boise movers will do their best to accommodate your moving needs in the timeframe that’s necessary in your circumstances.
