Packing an Electronic Piano to Move

All My Sons Moving & Storage has extensive experience moving all manner of musical instruments, including electronic pianos and keyboards. Will you be moving your electronic piano yourself? Here are five steps to help get the electric piano transported safely to your new home.

Step 1: Safely Disassemble the Electric Piano

Unplug the electric piano, wrap the power cord, and secure it with a zip tie or rubber band. If the electric piano or keyboard has batteries, remove them prior to shipping or storing the piano.

If the electronic piano detaches from its base or if there are detachable parts like a stand for sheet music, carefully disassemble the electric piano down to its base components.

Step 2: Choose a Sturdy Box

If you still have the original packing material that the piano came in, you can pack the piano or keyboard back into that box. This box likely came with all the packing material needed to safely transport the piano for a move.

Chances are, you threw that bulky box out a long time ago. If this is the case, you should find a sturdy box large enough to comfortably accommodate the electric piano. If you cannot locate a box for your piano, wrap it in packing material and furniture pads and transport it with the rest of your furniture.

Step 3: Wrap Electric Piano in Anti-Static Foam

Protect your electric piano with a layer of anti-static foam or bubble wrap. Add extra protection to the corners with corner protectors if you are able.

If you move or travel with your keyboard often, you might consider purchasing a special flight case for your keyboard from Sound Town, SKB Cases, or Road Cases.

Step 4: Place Electric Piano in Box and Fill Empty Space

Put the electric piano in the box you chose or its original box. Any empty space inside the box should be filled with foam or other packing material. This cuts down on the space your electric piano or keyboard can move around inside the box if the box gets jostled or bumped.

Step 5: Place Electric Piano in Moving Truck

Once the electric piano is safely inside the box, seal the box and label it with a black permanent marker. You might choose to write “FRAGILE” on the box to remind yourself and your movers to handle the box with care.

When you place the electric piano on the moving truck be sure not to stack anything heavy on top of it.

Make Music at the New Home

With the electric piano safely unboxed at the new home, you’ll be able to play jazzy tunes while the rest of your household unpacks. Enjoy this next chapter of delightful music-making.
