What is Salem, Mass, Known For?

Salem Witch Trials

Our Boston Moving Company knows how rich the history of Massachusetts is. As one of the first states, there is folklore going back to the 1600s, and one of the most notorious happenings of the colonial days held Salem at its core.

The Salem witch trials occurred in Massachusetts near the turn of the 17th century. It showed just how dangerous rumors could be, especially before the age of information. Between 1692 and 1693, more than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft. Before the hysteria died down, 20 people in the area were hanged.

Of course, this ugly mark has turned itself into quite an attraction for the town of Salem. The Jonathan Corwin House, known as The Witch House, was the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin. He was the party responsible for several of the sentencings in Salem. This piece of history is the only place still standing tied to the trials. You can also check out the Salem Witch Museum, where they exhibit the trials and artifacts from the time. Definitely spooky, these stops are worth your time. They even gave our Boston movers the heebie-jeebies!

If you’re willing to brave the haunted streets, our Salem, MA, movers are ready to serve you every step of the way. We provide exceptional customer service and produce satisfactory results, guaranteed.

Things to Do in Salem, MA

Peabody Essex Museum

This is one of our Boston movers’ favorite places to check out in Massachusetts. This is one of the oldest running museums in the United States, having been established in 1799. The Peabody houses one of the largest collections of Asian art in the country. Along with the art, the Peabody Essex Museum boasts two large libraries. With so much history to explore, be sure to visit this venue every so often, as the exhibits rotate out all the time.

The House of the Seven Gables

Made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book of the same name, this colonial mansion has stood and been maintained since 1668. Once the home of one Captain John Turner, Hawthorne’s book is a gruesome tale about a family curse. The book has been adapted several times for the screen and the stage. Today, you can visit the grounds and take a tour of this historic setting.

Winter Island

If you’re moving to Salem, be ready for life by the sea. There are a few beaches with great swimming, but our local Boston moving company is partial to the sights of Winter Island. Fort Pickering is the main attraction on the island, an old coast guard air station. Not only is it a tourist attraction, but it’s a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The island was added to the Nation Register of Historic Places in 1994. If you’re in the mood for a fresh ocean breeze, make your way over to Winter Island and breathe deep!

New England Pirate Museum

If you were captivated by the witches, you’re going to love the pirates! Not much has been made of the New England sea robbers of the 1600s, but this museum catches the glory of these swashbuckling, American pirates. You can take the 30-minute tour and see some wondrous treasures and artifacts. You can even walk through a makeshift batcave to get a sense of what the pirates lived through. As one of the best moving companies in Boston, we highly recommend checking out this one-of-a-kind place!
