Famous People From Newton, MA

Roger Sherman

Roger Sherman is not a household name like the likes of Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton, but he played a major role in the American revolution and boasts something that the other founding fathers cannot – Sherman signed all four initial documents of American sovereignty: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. He also became the first mayor of Albany, New York, and achieved a successful career in law, despite lacking a formal education.

Mike Mangini

It didn’t take long for Mike Mangini to find his calling. He started playing drums at the age of two and, before long, he was establishing himself as one of the most incredible musicians in the world. Born in Newton, Mangini has held multiple World’s Fastest Drummer world records. A member of the staff at Berklee College of Music, Mangini got his shot on the big stage when he was called upon by the rock band Dream Theatre, whom he still performs with today.

Katherine Lee Bates

Katherine Lee Bates is an author, teacher, and songwriter that left her permanent mark on America through song. Bates is chiefly known for her verse-turned-melody, "America, the Beautiful," which she wrote during her tenure in Colorado College. Bates attended Newton High School while she was growing up, but she spent most of her life nearby in Wellesley and completed her bachelor's at Wellesley College. A little-known fact: Bates was known for social reform efforts and popularized the premise of Mrs. Claus.

Tenley Albright

Tenley Albright is one of the most decorated persons to come out of Newton, Massachusetts. Albright won four national championships, two world championships, and two continental championships throughout the mid-fifties as a figure skater. In 1956, after taking the silver medal four years earlier, Albright became the first American to win an Olympic Gold Medal in figure skating. To boot, she is a graduate of Harvard Medical School, and she practiced medicine for 23 years. She was presented a Golden Plate Award by the American Academy of Achievement in 1976.

Matt LeBlanc

Known for his portrayal as Joey Tribbiani in the global hit television series Friends, it’s amazing to think that LeBlanc was down to his last few dollars before he booked the role of a lifetime. Today he is a Golden Globe award-winning comedic actor and so entrenched in pop culture that no amount of pivoting will set him loose. If you don’t understand the pivoting reference, All My Sons also suggests you start binge-watching Friends immediately. LeBlanc also appeared in films such as Lost in Space and Charlie’s Angels, one of our Newton movers’ favorite flicks.
