What to Do Before Moving In

Many days before your moving date arrives, there are some things to do before moving into a new home. Accomplish these important preliminary tasks prior to your move and the first few days living in your new house or apartment won’t be as stressful of an experience. Preparation is key not only in ensuring a successful relocation, but also a smooth transition for you and your family.

The last thing you want is to arrive at your new home with all your unpacked moving boxes, go to switch on a light and finding yourselves in the darkness still.  You don’t want to arrive at your new home and find that your mail is still being sent to a wrong address, to the wrong people. Avoid these nightmare scenarios and more by learning what to do before moving.

Set Up Electricity and Water at Your Place

Having utilities set up at your new home before you arrive will go a long way to helping you settle in and feel at home. If your house or apartment has the electricity turned off or doesn’t have running water, good luck starting the unpacking process. While setting up electricity, gas, water, and sewage are the most vital things to do before moving, you’ll also want your home plugged into the Internet or equipped with a TV and phone cable. Do all that before moving so you can focus on settling in once you’ve relocated.

Notify Post Office of Your Change of Address

You’ll want to keep on receiving your bills, subscriptions, and other important mail after your residential move. However, if you don’t fill out an official change of address form, your mail will continue being sent to your old home and may end up in the wrong hands. Avoid that by filling out a change of address form at your local post office or online a few days or up to a week (depending if former occupants have already left) before your moving day.
