How to Prepare Your Refrigerator for Moving

Professional Sarasota movers know that preparing your fridge for a move is hard work. Not only do you have to worry about the food inside and what you’re going to do with it, but you also have to worry about cleaning and properly defrosting your freezer, too!

Not to worry if you’re not a professional mover, we have six helpful tips that will get you on the right track for preparing your refrigerator for a move.

  1. Get ready to clean. Collect everything that you’re going to need to clean your fridge. You’ll also need trash bags, moving blankets, a tape measurer, something to move heavy objects with (like a dolly), and something to secure heavy objects with (like a bungee cord).
  2. Empty what’s inside your refrigerator. It’s best to make the most out of the food in your fridge or freezer by using it. Depending on where you are in your move you may have to start throwing things out. Be sure to get rid of anything that is already open by throwing it away, or by giving it to someone who can use it while you’re moving.
  3. Defrosting. Be sure to perform Step 2 when you prepare you refrigerator for moving about 24-48 hours before you begin your packing process for your move so that you can unplug and defrost your fridge. You’ll want to put towels down to catch the water if you have a large fridge that can’t be moved outside.
  4. Clean out your fridge. You will want to get rid of any moisture or water that remains inside your fridge completely before closing it for your move. Any leftover water or moisture can cause mildew to start growing.
  5. Secure your shelves. Make sure that the shelves of the fridge and freezer are either removed or properly secured inside so that they don’t come loose and break during your move.
  6. Measure your fridge. Make sure you measure the height, length and width of your fridge before trying to remove it from your home. It may not fit through the doorways or in the moving van.
