Tips for Having a Smooth Move
If you’re about to hit the road and move into a new house, you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you. Between finding Raleigh movers, packing up your stuff, and driving long distances, moving can definitely be a hassle. Here are some tips on how to have a smooth move!
Don’t Skimp on Boxes
Some Raleigh movers will help you pack, and others will just do the heavy stuff. If you’re packing yourself, make sure to have a lot of boxes. Moving tends to take more boxes than people think and having plenty of boxes will make your life easier. If you have boxes you don’t use, most places will allow you to return them for a refund. It’s a good idea to have at least five boxes waiting in a corner until the very end. This will help you move last minute items such as clothing, bathroom supplies, and cleaning tools.
Don’t Forget to Use Wardrobe Boxes
Wardrobe boxes are large, tall boxes generally used for clothing. However, they are also excellent for packing big items like pillows, blankets, and sheets. They aren’t good for items that are really heavy, such as books. You don’t want to make boxes too big to lift. Throwing out your back is never a good thing, let alone doing it on moving day.
Make a List
There’s a lot to think about while you’re moving, so make a list! Before you start stuffing boxes full of your items, make a system for how you are organizing yourself. This will help in the unpacking stage because you’ll know where everything is located. You’ll be able to direct boxes to the right rooms of your new place.
Color Coordinate Your Efforts
If lists aren’t your cup of tea, you could always try color coordinating while packing. All you need to do is designate a color for each room of your house. For example, your bedroom could be blue and the kitchen could be orange. You can use colored duct tape or stickers to mark the boxes. If you’ve hired Raleigh movers, you can make them a color-coded “map” that shows them where to take each color of box.
It can be tempting to just start throwing things into random boxes, but you’ll thank yourself later if you stay organized. Put the lampshade in the same box as the lamp. Put the bookends with books. When you’re in your new home you won’t want to spend days trying to track down random items.
Pack Ahead of Time
It may be tempting to wait until the last minute to pack, but you’ll regret it on moving day. You don’t need all of your summer clothes in the winter. You probably don’t use the stuff in your basement or garage every day. The more you can get done ahead of time, the less painful moving day will feel.
If you’ve got a lot of luggage lying around, don’t forget to use the bags to carry things. Luggage is easier to haul around than boxes. Fill luggage with things you’ll need right away in the new house since it will be easy to spot.
