How to Get to Know Your New Neighborhood

Moving to a new neighborhood means familiarizing yourself with the area and settling into a routine all over again. Exploring a new city can be a lot of fun! Our Kansas City residential movers can help you find your bearings in your new neighborhood. We understand the feeling of being the new kid on the block and have put together some ways to help you settle into your new neighborhood.

Become Familiar with the Community

Getting to know your new neighborhood is a great way to start making yourself feel at home when you’re moving to a new city. You may be moving to a neighborhood where your neighbors are not the friendliest, so you should not entirely rely on them for help or info about the area. Instead, our Kansas City movers recommend a few other ideas.

Find ways to get outside.
When you move, you want to start getting to know your new neighborhood. Going outside is honestly the best way to do so; how else will you learn about anything beyond your own home if you don’t go out and explore! In a day and age where we can have everything delivered to us, sometimes finding the motivation to get outside is hard. However, finding reasons to get outside, like walking the dog or riding your bike, is a great way to run into people and spark conversations. You can share facts about Kansas City you may know to break the ice and you’ll probably find other common ground in the process.

Throw a housewarming party.
If you want to get to know people in your new neighborhood, how about throwing a housewarming party and invite your neighbors?! You can get to know the people who live around you and the neighborhood at the same time. Ask your neighbors about some of their favorite local places; maybe even suggest meeting there in the near future so you can start developing relationships with those around you.

Get involved in neighborhood activities.
The best way to get to know what your neighborhood is all about, what people care about, is to get involved! If you are moving to a place that has an HOA, consider joining the board or just stopping in for some meetings. If there are any other community-based activities in your neighborhood that you may be interested in, participate with your neighbors and you’ll see just how quickly your neighborhood becomes more familiar.

Explore.
Sometimes, the best way of getting to know your new neighborhood is to just get lost. Go out and explore not only the streets directly around your new home but also the surrounding communities as well. Establish your go-to places like the market and the post office during the week if you have time or on the weekends. You should also keep an eye out for fun places like restaurants, the movie theater, and other entertainment opportunities for a fun day or a night out. While you are exploring, you can meet people simply by asking for directions and local suggestions.
