Many businesses are trying to stay open shifting their manufacturing efforts while helping their local communities by making cloth masks. Many are offering to donate masks to the healthcare industry and other essential businesses with every purchase made, but there’s also a limit to how many they can produce. Though N95 masks or other OSHA regulated masks are being prioritized for frontline healthcare workers, people need to find solutions, alternatives, other avenues to acquire a face face mask. If you are having a hard time finding masks on retail sites like Amazon, our movers in Indianapolis share how to make a face mask using a handkerchief.

Handkerchief Face Mask Instructions

To make your own face mask, you can use a handkerchief, or any cloth about the same size, and some hair ties or rubber hands.

1. Take the handkerchief and fold it in half to make a crease. Unfold it.

2. Place a piece of paper towel or a coffee filter in the center of the handkerchief.

3. Fold down the top part of the handkerchief, aligning the edge to the middle crease. Fold up the bottom part of the handkerchief, matching the edge to the middle crease. This will allow the filter or paper towel to rest between the layers of fabric for additional protection.

4. Wrap the hair tie or rubber band about one-third of the way in from the edge on each side.

5. Fold the left side of the handkerchief in toward the center. Then fold the right side in, tucking it into the left-side flap.

To wear your homemade no-sew face mask, place it over your nose and mouth, then pull the rubber bands up so that they rest behind your ears and hold the mask in place.
