4 Things to Do Before Moving

So, you are getting ready for the big day – moving to your new home! With all the to-dos and craziness approaching, it can get overwhelming. That’s why our South Carolina moving company is here to help. We’ve helped hundreds of families in Greenville relocate to their new homes, so you can trust that we know what we’re doing. Our Greenville movers are here to share our five most important tasks to do before moving.

Task #1: Clean Out Your House

The most important thing to do is to clean out your house. You don’t want to spend valuable time and money moving items that you don’t need! Moving is a great time to take an inventory of your items and get rid of belongings that you no longer want. Go room by room and spend a couple hours separating everything into three categories: items you want to keep, items you want to sell or donate, and items you want to throw away. This makes it easier for you to get organized. If you are moving long-distance, start making some of the food in the pantry and the freezer so you can use it up before you go. Host a yard sale to make some money, sell items on online marketplaces, or donate them to local charities or shelters.

Task #2: Research Your Movers

Make sure you know who you are working with when it comes to relocating your belongings. You want to make sure you are hiring reputable movers that you can trust. Look up a few Greenville movers that look good to you. Take some time to look up each of them online, on review sites like Yelp, Google, Facebook, and more. Look up their US DOT (Department of Transportation) number to ensure that they don’t have any major discrepancies on their record. Once you have three to four top moving companies, give them each a call. This gives you a better understanding of how their customer service will be and how helpful they will be. Then make sure you meet with them in person to get a quote.

Task #3: Forward Your Mail and Update Your Address

This task is one that many people overlook, but it’s important to update your address and forward your mail so you don’t miss any important bills or information. The US Post Office has an online form that you can fill out with your current address, new address, and what day you’d like mail forwarding to start. It’s quick and easy. Then make sure you take all your monthly subscriptions, credit cards, etc., and change your address to your new one so that no magazines, monthly beauty boxes, prepaid meals, and packages arrive at your old address where you can’t get them.

Task #4: Look into Moving Insurance

Every South Carolina moving company is required to offer moving insurance, but this insurance is just the standard level, which means it protects your items up to $.60 per pound. If you do the math, you may realize that you need additional coverage. Many Greenville movers offer premium plans so make sure you ask the right questions to get the coverage you need and consider a third party if needed.
