Spring Cleaning Tips During COVID-19

The time-honored tradition of spring cleaning has never felt as urgent and important as it does now. As the country continues to go through the COVID-19 pandemic, cleanliness and sanitation have become top priority considerations for American residents, many of whom are stuck working and staying at home. As the time to deep clean your home comes nearer, our Cleveland movers have come up with a few coronavirus cleaning tips you can follow to ensure you home is fresh, clean, and safe!

Start With All-Purpose Cleaner

While cleaning surfaces in your home alone does not kill germs, it does remove them and reduce the risk of infection. With that in mind, deep cleaning your home can help boost your other coronavirus prevention methods. Start by cleaning your home’s surfaces using a multipurpose or all-purpose cleaner. These cleaning products are designed to work on all types of surfaces. For nontoxic options, look for the Method or Seventh Generation brands. For options that clean and disinfect at the same time, try the all-purpose cleaners with bleach from Clorox or Lysol (these are popular with our Cleveland local movers).

Use EPA-Registered Disinfectants Only

Once your surfaces are clean, sanitize highly used areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, office, and living room. Be sure to disinfect doorknobs, tables, desks, and anywhere else you often put hands on. Unlike cleaning, disinfecting does kill germs and if you use the right products, it can even kill the coronavirus. When choosing disinfectant products, look through the list published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of registered disinfectant sprays and wipes: List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Soap

There is a very good reason why the CDC recommends people regularly wash their hands with soap and warm water to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Not only does soap remove germs, it has been shown to kill the virus. Both bar soap and liquid soap dissolve the fat membrane of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (the coronavirus that caused COVID-19 disease).1 This leads the virus to fall apart and die (become inactive).

It is difficult for many people to find disinfectant cleaning products due to low stock caused by panic buying. Fortunately, regular liquid soap is a good alternative to bleach-based and alcohol-based disinfectants. Chances are high that most stores around your area are well-stocked with soap. So, one of our spring cleaning tips during COVID-19 is to try using soap.

Soap is effective at removing germs and viruses from your skin but is also effective at cleaning household surfaces and preventing the spread of coronavirus. Just be sure to rinse away the soap suds with warm water. Go over the surface again with vinegar or all-purpose cleaner to get rid of any soap residue.
