Tips to Improve Your Home

Your home is your sanctuary, so you should rid any items from your home that are detrimental to your health and well-being. That said, some of us are unaware that everyday items can be increasingly dangerous for our health and the health of our loved ones. Luckily, your friends at the Birmingham local movers have a few tips to help you live your best life at home.

Detox Your Bedroom

Detox your bedroom. Give yourself 30 minutes to clean up your bedroom. Wash your bedding and your pillows. Did you know regularly cleaning your pillows is one of the easiest ways to reduce toxins in your room? Cleaning pillows will cut down on dust mites and other allergens.

Open The Curtains

Open the curtains and blinds and let all-natural sunshine combat mold spores! The heat from the sun will naturally remove excess moisture and decrease the growth of mold and other fungus. Let the sun shine on your pillows and sheets before making the bed, too.

Stop using your iPhone, iPad, tablet, game console and other electronics for the hour leading up to bedtime. Artificial light from these electronics stimulates brain activity and make it harder for you to fall asleep. Cut back using these items late at night and you will sleep easier.

Watch out for VOCs

Indoor air pollution can also come from paint on the walls, thanks to volatile organic compounds (VOC), which are a big cause of concern for inducing cancer, liver damage, and kidney damage. These paints also have a strong smell that can linger for weeks. Read the paint cans and make sure you select low-to-no VOC paint next time you buy.

Paint isn't the only place VOCs are hiding though-they can lurk in commercial cleaning products, nail polish remover, air fresheners, and even furniture! Furniture can be treated with flame retardant chemicals and formaldehyde for protecting it, however it might be leaking VOCs and damaging you and your family's health.

Improve Your Air Quality

Use house plants to create better indoor air quality. Plants will balance out the indoor air humidity, specifically English Ivy. English Ivy purifies indoor air as well as being a great humidifier as it increases moisture levels in your home. Eucalyptus is good for congestion and it clears phlegm. Gerbera daisies are ideal for combating insomnia, and they release oxygen at night-place them near your bed for optimal oxygen intake while you sleep.

Avoid commercial air fresheners like Febreze, which are packed with chemicals and harmful artificial ingredients. Instead, place natural air fresheners around your home. Mix cinnamon sticks, allspice, and whole cloves mixed with a cup of water and heat it up for an all-natural potpourri. Combine vanilla extract and water into a spray bottle, and you have all natural vanilla air freshener!
