1. The official state meal of Oklahoma is black-eyed peas, chicken-fried steak, okra, squash, corn on the cob, cornbread, barbecue pork, biscuits, sausage and gravy, grits, strawberries, and pecan pie. Talk about things you may not know about Oklahoma!

2. Oklahoma is the birthplace of the shopping cart. Invented in 1937 by the owner of a supermarket named Piggly Wiggly, Sylvan Goldman created the “folding basket carrier” as a way for customers to carry groceries.

3. Oklahoma is home to the annual Big Foot Festival.

4. Voicemail was patented by Gordon Matthews, a Tulsa native who invented the technology during the 1970s. In the 1980s he later patented Voice Mailbox Express.

5. The only person to have ever been struck by space debris was an Oklahoman, according to the Aerospace Corporation. A woman was hit by falling “space junk” from U.S. rocket, Delta II.

6. Beaver, Oklahoma is the host of the World Championship Cow Chip Throw. An event that takes place every April and has been around for 50 years!

7.  Once upon a time, when the Earth was still forming, Oklahoma was near the equator.

8. The capital of Oklahoma is equidistant from L.A. and New York City.

9. Oklahoma is where the US had its first tornado warning was issued in 1948.

10. Oklahoma’s state flower is mistletoe.

11. Oklahoma’s capital, Oklahoma City, is one of only two sates who have capitals named after the state.

12. Oklahoma is the headquarters for 39 American Indian tribes.

13. There are more manmade lakes in Oklahoma than any other state.

14. Whaling is illegal in Oklahoma.
