Moving to Memphis means BBQ, blues music, and Graceland. It also means you have a lot to explore and experience. Your Memphis moving company wants you to be well-acquainted with your new city before you arrive, so we put together some places to check out to make sure that you get the most out of your new town.
Music Mecca
Memphis is full of music. It is where the blues was born and home to Graceland, Elvis Presley's estate. But there are plenty more reasons why Memphis is one the country's music meccas. Sun Studio is located in town, and it played a major role in the development of rock and roll. It is where Elvis recorded his first record. Stax Records, a major label in the soul music movement, is another Memphis landmark. The label is often credited with the birth of “southern soul.”
The annual Beale Street Music Festival is a big deal in Memphis. It is a three-day festival that includes all kinds of music. Artists like Kid Rock, Snoop Dogg, Pretty Lights, Third Eye Blind, Seether, Foster the People, and Patti LaBelle have all recently performed.
A City Rich in History and Culture
Memphis was at the center of the Civil Rights Movement, so there is plenty of cultural significance throughout the city. The Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, still stands. It was renovated and reopened as the National Civil Rights Museum in 1991. You can take your kids there for an educational day in Memphis history.
The Orpheum Theatre is a cultural icon and still presents Broadway musicals and concerts. Built in 1928, the theatre is a great place to learn more about Memphis' history. The Cannon Center for Performing Arts, on the other hand, is a much larger and more modern venue where you can enjoy ballets, operas, and even shows for your kids.
Soul Food
Memphis is known for soul food and BBQ. It hosts the annual World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest. Each May, BBQ masters compete to win cash prizes, while thousands of attendees chow down on BBQ pork, beef and chicken. What could be better? There are also plenty of traditional soul food eateries in town where you can order fried okra, creamy mac and cheese, and hushpuppies (drool).
Family-Friendly
Your kids will love Memphis, and there are tons of cool places that you can enjoy with the entire family. The Memphis Zoo stretches over 70 acres and is home to over 500 species. $77 million has been invested in the zoo, and it now includes 19 major exhibits.
The Children's Museum of Memphis, located in Midtown Memphis, offers hands-on activities and exhibits that will allow your kids to discover math, science, and art. It is a fun and educational place for your children to grow, learn, and meet new friends. And if your tots love museums, take them to Memphis' Pink Palace of Family Museums. There are historic, educational, technological, space, and animal exhibits to entertain the whole family.
