How-To-Prepare-Your-Pet-For-An-Interstate-Move

Now that you have hired professional movers to handle your full-service move to Memphis, All My Sons Moving & Storage is sure that you are prepared to relocate, but is your pet? Especially if you are moving to another state, there are certain things that you need to do to prepare your pet for an interstate move to Memphis.

Our local Memphis movers have been successfully moving families and their animals for over 25 years, so use these tips to make sure your beloved pet makes it to your new home safely.

Tip #1: Research and understand rules and regulations for pets in the county you are moving to. If you are moving to Memphis, for example, check out the city's website for any vaccinations or shots your pet may need upon arrival that the city you currently live in does not require. Cities and states differ in vaccination and shot requirements because a county may have recently experienced a rabies outbreak, which can cause a regulation for pet owners.

Tip #2: Bring your pet the vet for a check-up before making an interstate move to Memphis. After giving your pet a physical examination, your vet may suggest taking certain actions during a long drive to your new home. For example, your vet may tell you to take a break from driving every couple of hours so your older pet can get out of the car and move around to increase blood circulation. Your vet may also tell you to stop frequently for bathroom breaks to decrease the chances of your pet getting an infection.

Tip #3: Bring bottled water to give your pet during your move to Memphis across state lines. Your pet will not be used to the water in different areas and if they have a sensitive stomach, they could get sick. This is something you definitely don't want to happen as it will be just as difficult for you to handle as it is uncomfortable for your pet.

Tip #4: Keep your pet in an appropriately-sized and ventilated carrier. Our local Memphis movers understand you may want your pooch stretched across your lap for comfort while driving, but the truth is it's not safe for you or your pet. Put your certified pet carrier in your car where it will not slide around and place something soft in it for your pet to lay on.

Tip #5: Adjust your pet's feeding schedule. Feed your pet a light meal three to four hours prior to departing for your move to Memphis. Do not feed your pet while your vehicle is moving, as it can cause motion sickness.

Tip #6: Make sure your pet has its identification collar on at all times and always use a leash when exiting the car. Pets can be unpredictable during a road trip. The last thing you want is to open your car door and have frightened Mr. Fuzzy go bolting into the bushes of a rest-stop not wearing an identification collar.
