Guide to Moving Out of Your Parent’s House

Moving out of your parent's house for the first time is a daunting task for many younger people. To leave the comfort, security, and routine of your family home, the home you likely grew up in, is a hard thing to do. But the question for most families isn't whether you should move out of your parent's house, but when.

Don't worry. We're here to help! At All My Sons Moving & Storage, our Memphis movers have helped countless college students and millennials leave the nest with not only our moving services, but also our advice. Below is our guide to moving out of your parent's house.

Before You Move Out of Your Parent's House

1. Develop Bill-Paying Habits

While you're still living with your parents, you should get comfortable with working according to a monthly budget. Offer to pay your parents for rent and utilities. Create a hypothetical budget of monthly rent, transportation, grocery, and utility expenses. Put aside that money every month and use it toward paying off your student loans instead of personal uses. You'll develop much-needed bill-paying habits which will prove useful once you're living on your own.

2. Step Up Your Job Search

If your current job will not comfortably support you when you start living by yourself and paying rent, you'll need to jumpstart your job search. By looking for and getting a new sensible job while still living with your family home, not only will you be able to afford living by yourself once you move out, but you'll also have a better idea of the ideal locations for your new home.

If you are millennial just entering the job market, consider moving to Memphis. It has been recognized numerous times as a top city for millennials. A move to Memphis will give you access to one of Tennessee's strongest job markets.

When You Move Out of Your Parent's House

1. Make a Budget

Moving out of your parent's house does take some money. Your budget and savings should account for the cost of hiring professional Memphis movers.
