The first visit to Provo was in 1776 by a Spanish Franciscan missionary-explorer named Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante. In 1849, 33 Mormon families from Salt Lake City settled there and it was named Fort Utah. The Battle of Fort Utah was fought there in 1850. It was then renamed Provo for Etienne Provost who was an early French-Canadian trapper who arrived there in 1825.
