Provo is home to Brigham Young University which is one of the largest private higher education institutions in the country!  Provo is also home to the largest missionary training center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  There are 1,100 instructors who teach up to 62 languages.  After completing their training the missionaries are sent out into the field to join over 52,000 other missionaries in over 120 countries!  Provo is also home to the Peaks Ice Arena which served as a venue for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002.

 The first visit to Provo was in 1776 by a Spanish Franciscan missionary-explorer named Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante.  In 1849, 33 Mormon families from Salt Lake City settled there and it was named Fort Utah.  The Battle of Fort Utah was fought there in 1850.  It was then renamed Provo for Etienne Provost who was an early French-Canadian trapper who arrived there in 1825.
