The Best Cats for Apartments

What’s more sincere than the purrs of affection from your cat as you come through the door after a long day? Pets are what make a house a home. There is nothing like the love of a cat or furry friend but choosing the right one for you is important. Our Omaha movers suggest that you consider whether or not your living space suits your feline companion so you can create the purrfect environment for you both.

What Is the Best Cat for an Apartment?

Cats are generally independent and enjoy occupying small spaces, so it may seem strange to think that there is a breed of cat that isn’t suitable for apartments. However, not all cats enjoy lounging around and napping all day. Some cats can be really energetic and require room to roam and play. The Omaha local movers of All My Sons Moving & Storage share tips on choosing a cat for your apartment. Check out these breeds of cat that will thrive in your apartment setting.

1. American Shorthair
If you’re planning to have a cat as a pet in your apartment, the American Shorthair cat is a social, mild-tempered cat that will enjoy your company just as much as you enjoy theirs. American Shorthair cats are great for apartments so long as you are around to interact with them. However, like most cats, the American Shorthair cat is also good at entertaining itself with toys and a nice window to look out of.  American Shorthair cats aren’t very large cats at about 8 – 10 inches in height, weighing around 10 – 15 lbs. American Shorthair cats have a short, dense coat with an athletic build.

2. Birman
Birman cats are known for their sweet and affectionate nature. These cats really enjoy making a comfy spot on your lap for a nap. The Birman doesn’t require a lot of space, which makes them a perfect candidate.  Birman cats are calm, but with a playful side; if you already have another cat or other pets, Birman cats really enjoy the company of other animals. Like American Shorthair cats, Birman cats are not very large, about 8 – 10 inches in height, weighing 8 – 12 lbs. You can spot a Birman cat with their unique features including a round face, oval-shaped eyes that are usually blue and a silky coat.

3. British Shorthair
When choosing a cat for your apartment, our Omaha residential movers are particularly fond of the British Shorthair cat. These cats are known to be incredibly adaptable to new surroundings and are comfortable in apartments. The laid-back British Shorthair cats prefer to lounge around the house and will happily be your couch nap buddy. When British Shorthairs get their wild bursts of energy and want to play, challenge them mentally and physically until they are, once again, very chill cats. A little larger than the American Shorthair and Birman cats, the British Shorthair cat is about 12 – 14 inches in height and weigh anywhere from 7 – 17 lbs.!

4. Burmese
If you’re looking for a snuggly cat, look no further than the Burmese cat breed. These incredibly social cats prefer constant company either from their owner or other animals. Burmese cats are very athletic so you’ll want to have a few cat trees around so they can exercise, practice jumping, and just explore. Burmese cats are medium-sized cats that are about 10 – 12 inches in height and weigh 6 – 10 lbs. Burmese cats can be spotted by their round, golden eyes and compact, muscular bodies.

5. Maine Coon
If you want a more independent cat for your apartment, the Maine Coon will be the perfect fit. Maine Coon cats are friendly, social, and don’t require a lot of attention from their owners. Maine Coon cats are fine entertaining themselves, so if you work late hours or are in and out of the house often, these cats will be okay with their favorite toy and a windowsill. Have you ever wanted to take your cat for a walk? The Maine Coon cat doesn’t mind wearing a leash. Maine Coons are the largest of the 5 cats listed. They’re 10 – 16 inches in height and weigh 10 -25 lbs. Maine Coon cats have thick coats and a muscular build.
