Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States, was born in Raleigh in 1908. He spent his childhood running all over North Carolina with his brother finding work as a tailor wherever he could. He served in the United States Army and fought in the American Civil War in 1861. Initially serving as vice president, Johnson was appointed to the presidency after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He went on to a second term and served as the president from 1865-1869. Johnson’s childhood home can be found at the Mordecai Historic Park in Raleigh and is open to visitors.

Clay Aiken

Clay Aiken is an American singer, actor, and television personality. He is most famously known for placing second on American Idol in 2003, which paved the way for his multi-platinum debut album, “Measure of a Man.” Aiken attended Raleigh’s Leesville Road High School and enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Most of his early life was spent running around Raleigh, performing for crowds all over North Carolina before his global fame.

Pete Maravich

Next up on our list of famous people from Raleigh is professional basketball player Pete Maravich, nicknamed “Pistol Pete.” Although originally born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Raleigh in his early life graduating from Needham B. Broughton High School. He was a first-round pick in the 1970 NBA Draft, selected by the Atlanta Hawks, where he played point guard for four years. In 1974, he played for the Utah Jazz, before finding his place in 1980 with the Boston Celtics. Maravich passed away in 1988 from heart failure while playing a pickup basketball game at a church in Pasadena, California. He is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of his era.

Michael C. Hall

Born in Raleigh in 1971, Hall is an American actor, musician, and producer. He has won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role as Dexter, portraying a homicidal man living a double life as a forensic analyzer that spends his free time murdering heinous perpetrators. Hall graduated from Ravenscroft School in 1989, where he found his voice for the theater and performing arts.
