Miniature Enthusiasts Need to Move Too

The professional movers providing luxury moving services and packing services at All My Sons Moving & Storage offer advice on how to move dollhouses safely.

If you have a single dollhouse to move, it’s likely a component of your child’s joyous playroom and you will be packing it with the toys. If you have more than one dollhouse, then you could be a miniature enthusiast who delights in collecting, assembling, and creating beautiful little homes. You’re passionate about arranging tiny furniture and take pride in your custom-built accessories.

Unfortunately, sometimes even miniature enthusiasts must move and dollhouses are a pain to relocate with you.

Here are five steps to packing your dollhouses so that they can make the move.

Step 1: Empty the Dollhouse of Anything Not Glued Down

Start by removing any furniture or accessories from the dollhouse that are not glued down. If you are concerned about forgetting the arrangements of your rooms then take pictures prior to emptying the dollhouse in order to document what the rooms looked like.

Wrap doll furniture and accessories in tissue paper or bubble wrap and then put them in a shoe box. Group like-items together in plastic bags and be sure to label everything so that you do not misplace pieces.

Step 2: Disassemble Dollhouses That Safely Come Apart

If your dollhouse can safely be disassembled then take it apart until you have just its base components. Save any extra hardware pieces for the dollhouse in labeled plastic bags. You should pack these plastic bags with the rest of your dollhouse accessories and furniture.

Dollhouses that are glued together or otherwise do not disassemble should be moved as a single piece.

Step 3: Stuff Rooms With Packing Material

Stuff rooms with tissue paper, bubble wrap, or packing peanuts to help the dollhouse keep its shape during transit.

If there are any elements of your dollhouse that stick out from the main body such as towers, spires, mailboxes, or shingles then add some extra packing material around the feature prior to putting the entire dollhouse into a large box or crate.

Step 4: Ask Movers About Custom Crating

Professional movers who provide luxury moving services often offer custom crating options for special, fragile items like antiques, specialized machinery, and fine artwork. If you collect, display, and work on dollhouses that you’d like to have relocated with you then you should ask your professional movers about custom crating.

Custom crates are designed with the specific dimensions of your fragile item in mind. Items inside are packed snug and secure to prevent damage.

Dollhouses that are working children’s toys might not need such special attention. You might be able to put the dollhouse pieces in large cardboard boxes, or wrap them in furniture pads and transport them with the rest of your large items.

Step 5: Seal and Label as Fragile

Once your dollhouse is packed in a crate or box, make sure all empty space is filled with packing material. This will help to prevent the dollhouse from sustaining damage during transit from shifting around in its box or crate.

Label the box or crate as fragile so you and your movers remember to treat the item with care. Draw an arrow on the box or crate to indicate which side should face up at all times so that no movers accidentally set your dollhouses upside-down in the truck or at your new location.

With the dollhouses packed, you can take great care in reassembling them at your new home. If you loved putting the dollhouses together the first time, then the idea of setting them right back up again might make your heart beat a little faster. Have a happy time arranging your tiny furniture!
