According to an environmental services department, “If all morning newspapers read in the United States were recycled, 41,000 trees would be saved daily and 6 million tons of waste would never end up in landfills.” It’s facts like this and others that have Salt Lake City moving company, All My Sons Moving & Storage, encouraging those moving to Salt Lake City to think about what they are getting rid of before their move and contemplate recycling when possible.

What to Recycle:

Items that can be recycled are broken down into 3 categories:

  • Paperback books

  • Cardboard boxes

  • Food boxes

  • Old/Junk mail (be sure to shred these items for identification security)

  • Cardboard egg cartons

  • Cereal boxes

  • Construction paper

  • Catalogs, phone books

PLASTIC- Plastic is an extremely popular material to use when packaging goods. Therefore, it is the perfect material to recycle before you move to Salt Lake City, and it can be repurposed as future packaging.

  • Plastic food tubs and lids (i.e., butter, yogurt, salad dressings)

  • Beverage containers (i.e., orange juice, milk jug)

  • Empty cleaner bottles or laundry detergent jugs

  • Plastic shopping bags (place several bags inside one bag to make it easier for transportation)

  • Water bottles

  • Plastic tubs

  • Old medicine vials (Be sure to remove label that contains personal information)

METAL

  • Aluminum soda or soup cans

  • Aluminum foil

  • Canned foods

  • Old pots and pans

When recycling any paper, plastic, or metal items before moving to Salt Lake City, be sure to remove any residue and rinse out any items that have contained food. How to Recycle:Once you have gone through all of your items in your home in preparation for your move to Salt Lake City, research your new hometown’s recycling program online or call your city’s environmental services department. You will be able to find out how the above items should be separated, bagged, and when and where you can take them to be recycled. Most cities use designated bags or colored bins to differentiate recyclables, as well as request residents to place them outside their homes, close to the street for pick-up once a week. When separating items in your home for recycling before your move to Salt Lake City, never place the following toxic and/or dangerous items in a pile to be repurposed:

  • Soiled paper or tissue

  • Paint buckets
