How to Care for Children During COVID-19 Pandemic

The coronavirus has taken the world by storm. There is no media outlet that is not talking about COVID-19. Whether the news is good or bad, the coronavirus is always on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Because new information about the virus is being released every day, many people are still getting caught up on all the facts. With the announcement that older people are not the only ones who are at high risk for contracting the coronavirus, one thing many people seem to be concerned about is the symptoms of the coronavirus and how to know if they or their kids actually have it. Caring for children during a pandemic can be a challenge, but our Newport News movers are here to help.

Are the Symptoms of COVID-19 Different in Children Than Adults?

According to the CDC, the symptoms of the coronavirus are not different between children and adults. On the contrary, they are similar.1 The only slight difference is that children who have tested positive for COVID-19 have presented mild symptoms that mimic the flu. These symptoms include fever, runny nose, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea. It has yet to be determined whether children with underlying medical conditions or children with special healthcare needs are at higher risk for severe illness. Unfortunately, there is still a lot to uncover about how COVID-19 affects children.

When caring for children during the COVID-19 pandemic, if you suspect that your child may be sick or is displaying symptoms of the coronavirus, contact your primary care doctor right away.

How Can I Protect My Child from COVID-19?

Our Newport News residential movers understand that your kids are your top priority. We want to share how you can protect them from the coronavirus and how they can help protect themselves. When caring for children during the outbreak of COVID-19, be sure to teach them the following:

Wash hands often
Reminding your children to wash their hands often with soap and water is a great way to protect them from COVID-19. Even though your kids are not in school now, carrying a bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer (60% or higher) can also be helpful.

Stay away from sick people
Being home all day can get pretty boring, but letting your kids know the importance of staying away from people who are sick – even if it is not with the coronavirus – is a great way of caring for children during the COVID-19 pandemic while keeping them informed.

Cleaning your home
Disinfecting high-touch points and surfaces daily can prevent the spread of COVID-19 to your children. Be sure to thoroughly wipe down tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, remotes, handles, desks, toilets, and sinks.

Do laundry often
Washing things like stuffed animals, sheets and clothing is also important when caring for children during this pandemic. If you can, wash these items using the warmest water (per the manufacturer’s instructions) and make sure they dry completely. If someone in your home is sick, it is ok to wash their items together, but it is also always safer not to.
