The Alamo in San Antonio Celebrates its 175th Birthday

Everyone can have fun in San Antonio, especially around this time because it’s the Alamo’s 175th anniversary. But besides this travel destination, there’s always the Riverwalk and the Pearl Brewery sunset cruises, the mission trail, theme parks and so much more. More than 26 million people visit the Alamo every year. It was named “one of America’s top 10 historic sites.”

Thanks to tourism websites, the San Antonio movers learned a little more about the Alamo so we can share the information with you. The story goes… In the 18th century, the Spanish church established five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River with the first one being the Alamo. It served as a way of station between Texas and Mexico. For 13 days in 1836, about 200 Texas defenders held the Alamo from over 1000 of General Santa Anna’s troops. Today the Alamo is a symbol of heroism, courage and sacrifice. It has also been featured in many movies such as Sandra Bullock’s Miss Congeniality. There are songs that also immortalize the Alamo such as Marty Robbins’ “Ballad of the Alamo” and Peter Rowan’s “Midnight Moonlight.”

Texas’ Alamo has tributes around the world including in England and Australia. A chunk of the Alamo is included in the rock collection that forms part of Chicago’s Tribune Tower, along with the Great Wall of China, the Coliseum and the World Trade Center.
