According to an article on OregonLive.com, a Milwaukie ‘mover’ was indicted a few days ago on seven counts of fraud. A federal jury alleged that he got business with low bids and after picking up people’s personal belongings, he asked for more cash. He failed to disclose to his customers he was actually a broker and would arrange for a third party to move the goods. This man allegedly did business under a number of pseudonyms and used numerous company names too. Even though the dollar losses aren’t that high, the assistant U.S. attorney on this case stated that years of complaints about this Milwaukie ‘mover’ prompted the prosecution.
In 1994, he was sued for some of the same allegations and misleading conduct.
Again, in 2001, the Oregon Department of Justice sued this man for misrepresenting himself and holding customers’ belongings hostage in order to get more payment. At that time, the state wanted him to return $8,344 in restitution to 13 customers and sought almost $200,000 in civil penalties. This led to a judgment permanently prohibiting him from providing intrastate and interstate moving services in May 2003.
