Converse was named after the Southern Pacific Railroad’s chief engineer and was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The Casa Navarro State Historic Site is the restored home of Tejano patriot Jose Antonio Navarro (1795-1871), a prominent San Antonio merchant, rancher and statesman. Visitors can tour the furnished home and immerse themselves in period antiques, copies of his writings and even discuss with informed interpreters.
