Get to Know Nashville
It’s hard to think of anything but crooning cowboys and the sight of the Grand Ole
Opry when thinking of Nashville, and that’s not such a bad thing! The home of country
music is where dreams come true, and so much more awaits you as you explore more
of this upbeat city.
Despite a growing metropolitan population of more than 1.5 million, citizens will
tell you that Nashville lacks the stressful “hustle and bustle” of other comparable
locations. The different pace is a welcomed attraction to newcomers and tourists
alike. But that’s not to say that Nashville is slow in development. An economic
boom under the leadership of Mayor Phil Bredesen in the 1990s started a wave of
urban renewal that is still alive today. Bredesen fostered the construction and
renovation of landmarks like the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Public
Library, various downtown area renovations, and the Sommet Center. Additionally,
Nashville will soon house the 1,000 foot tall Signature Tower, set to begin construction
in 2009.
Though Nashville is a renowned music recording hub and tourist destination, its
largest industry is health care. The 250 health care companies here pump 18.3 billion
dollars of revenue and sustain 94,000 jobs in Nashville each year.
For the devout among us, Nashville is also known as the Buckle of the Bible Belt.
Over 700 churches, several seminaries, a handful of Christian music companies, and
various major Protestant publishing companies operate here.
Yet another nickname for Nashville comes from the many colleges and universities
in the metropolitan area. The Athens of the South includes establishments such as
the American Baptist College, Belmont University, Nashville School of Law, and Vanderbilt
University, to
name a few.
