Homes Are Smaller These Days

If you’ve recently moved into a new home thanks to professional movers like the local Maryland movers, you might have noticed that the space is a little smaller. According to an article posted on MSN.com that highlights research from many different associations, homes are shrinking. For the first time in almost 30 years, the average newly built home shrank in 2009. This past year, the average size of a new, single-family home was 2,438 square feet, almost 100 square feet smaller then when the size peaked in 2007 at 2,521 square feet.

Also, homeowners are cutting back these days on the number of floors, choosing to live in a single story home, with less bedrooms and bathrooms. Single story homes made up 67% of new homes back in 1973, that percentage dropped to 43% in 2006-2007. According to the National Association of Homebuyers, this phenomenon is due to multiple factors: More first time home buyers, wanting to keep energy costs lower, tighter credit standards and less focus on the investment part of buying a home. The proportion of single-family homes with four bedrooms grew for almost 20 years and peaked at 39% in 2005. The number fell to 34% in 2009, while homes with three bedrooms increased from 49% in 2005 to 53% in 2009. In regard to the number of bathrooms, single family homes with three bathrooms and more fell from 28% in 2007 to 24% in 2009.

Homes with two bathrooms increased from 35% to 37% in 2009. Whichever new home you find, know that All My Sons of Maryland can help you move there easily and safely.
