Making Friends In Your New Neighborhood

Congrats! You found your dream home and are excited to be settled. Before you get too comfortable, introduce yourself to the neighbors. Making friends in a new neighborhood does not have to be intimidating. There are many things you can do to ease the transition and meet people in your community. Our Maryland auto movers compiled their best tips and tricks to meet your neighbors.

Introduce Yourself

Don’t be nervous to introduce yourself. Your new neighbors may be feeling just as shy as you are. If you see one of your neighbors outside, approach them and have a conversation. The fact that you’re new to the area is the perfect conversation starter. Your neighbor will be curious and ask you plenty of questions. The more you talk, the more likely you will be to find common interests. When you get home, write down their names to easily remember them.

Join a Class

A great way to meet new people is to enroll in a class. Whether it is a class at the local community college or fitness center, this will give you the opportunity to meet people and make new friends. Research your area for groups with the same hobbies as you. For example, if you love scrapbooking, consider looking for a local scrapbooking group. If you are struggling to find a group that suits your interests, start with a book club.

Go Outdoors

Staying inside and watching television will prevent you from meeting anyone new. If you have children, take them outside in the front yard and play. When moving to Maryland, explore the city to meet fellow newcomers. Those new to the area are eager to meet people, so do not be afraid to introduce yourself. Go on a tour of the city and you will be making friends in no time.

Ask for a Cup of Sugar

Once you introduce yourself to the neighbors, there is a mutual understanding to help each other out. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re in a pinch. Consider knocking on your neighbor’s door to borrow a cup of sugar. When they answer the door, reintroduce yourself, get to know them better, and ask if they have a cup of sugar.

Take Initiative

Once you have met a few people, consider inviting them over for dinner. Take initiative so you can have in-depth conversations and better get to know one another. If you get along, you might be invited to the next neighbor dinner party. You can also reach out for birthdays, holidays, and other special events. For example, if your next-door neighbor just had a baby, send them a congratulations!
