Making a long distance move this summer?
While many are busy finalizing their vacation plans for the summer, others are downsizing and packing preparing to relocate.  Statistics show moves happening all over the U.S., with a large sect migrating to the south.  Believe it or not, late spring and summer is a very busy time for the moving industry.  A number of families prefer to wait until schools out, therefore making their kids transition a lot smoother.

I believe there are ways to make your long distance move this summer simple and stress-free.  Begin by hiring a reputable moving company to handle the packing, loading, moving and storing.  A reliable mover is equipped with a trained staff to handle all of the pressure associated with a long distance move of a large family to a small apartment move of a college student back home.

Before you book one, request about three to five in-home estimates from reputable movers in your area.  The estimator will conduct an analysis of your property.  His or her goal is to map out the best move plan possible.  Once you receive your written estimates, narrow your search down to the mover which best fits your budget and comfort level.

After you select your moving company, you should immediately begin the move out process.  Your moving company of choice will most likely provide you with a list of tips to help make your transition a smooth one.  In addition to the ones you receive from your mover, I’ve listed a few of my own below:

  • Plan a garage sale to eliminate items that you don't need.
  • Secure change of address information from postal service.
  • Notify utility companies of cancellation of services.
  • Assemble important documents (i.e. policies, birth certificates, school records etc.).
  • Garner packing materials.
  • Disconnect major appliances

As time draws close to your family’s big day your relocation specialist should contact you to confirm the arrival time of your moving crew.  He or she should also follow-up with you to see if there are any last minute details their team may need to address.

On move day you want to make sure the foreman goes over the logistics/move plan with you.  Once you guys have met, the crew should begin packing and loading, because the clock is ticking.  At the end of loading I recommend a final walk-through of the home.  Once loading is done, unloading is only hours away!
