On the Move in Indianapolis!
Fast cars and football. What more could you want from an all-American city? Rich
in history and brimming with activity, Indianapolis was always destined for speed.
A well-known area for manufacturing automobiles in the early 1900s, Indianapolis
was already a major hub of regional transport. With roads connecting to major cities like Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit and St. Louis, this capital city easily found
its place as the “Crossroads of America.”
Indianapolis Colt fans are still grinning with pride from the Super Bowl XLI victory
over the Chicago Bears in February 2007. Since drafting star quarterback Peyton
Manning in 1998, the Colts have made playoffs in 7 of 9 years. Players and fans
will soon enjoy games in the new Lucas Oil Stadium, replacing the RCA Dome as the
new home of the Colts for the 2008 season.
But man cannot live on football alone. Indianapolis is also home to Bands of America,
a nationwide organization of high school marching, concert and jazz bands. Drum
Corps International has set up headquarters here as well, along with the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the main governing body for U.S. collegiate
sports.
Of course, who can forget the Indianapolis 500, the famous auto race preceded by
the month-long 500 Festival. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosts the largest single-day
sporting event in the world, drawing well over 250,000 spectators each year.
For a little peace and quiet, escape to one of the 200 Indianapolis parks that occupy
over 10,000 acres inside the city limits. The flagship Eagle Creek Park is the largest
in the city, and Garfield Park, established in 1881, is the oldest.
