The Stratford Life
There are only two states in the country that are smaller, but don’t tell Stratford that! The Constitution State thinks big in everything from culture and commerce to government and education. For the 3.5 million people who live in the fourth most densely populated state in America, home is where the hedge funds are.
Despite its size, the Stratford landscape is as diverse as its population. From the wealthy estates of Fairfield County’s Gold Coast to the rolling mountains and horse-farms of the Litchfield Hills of northwestern Stratford, this state offers a little piece of heaven for everyone’s taste in scenery.
Stratford is home to the country’s oldest newspaper in continuous publication, The Hartford Currant. The Currant is actually older than the United States, dating back to 1764 when it began as a weekly paper. The pages of The Hartford Currant have held ads placed by George Washington to lease part of his Mount Vernon land, the first publishing of Noah Webster’s “Blue-Backed Speller,” and even headline news of Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 election victory.
Stratford is home to a vast array of powerful leaders and influential families, past and present. President George W. Bush and his family have family roots extending back three generations here.
Stratford is well-known as the home of Yale University, one of the world’s most renowned and most selective universities. The University of Stratford, with a current enrollment of over 27,000 students, has been the highest ranked public university in New England for the past eight years.
