The Queen City: Cincinnati

Few cities are as rich in cultural history as Cincinnati. From the Over-the-Rhine district, treasured for its massive collection of 19th century Italianate structures, to the banks of the Ohio River with its memories of riverboat traffic, Cincinnati will feel like home the minute you arrive.

Well-known for its major role in Abolitionism, Cincinnati was home to Harriet Beecher Stowe and a famous stop on the Underground Railroad. This anti-slavery town bordered slavery towns in Kentucky and saw much tension during the Civil War. Today, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center commemorates the era as a symbol of the past, present, and future struggle for freedom.

Walk among the streets of Clifton Heights or downtown, and you can’t help but breathe in the mouth-watering smells of hearty Bavarian cooking. Cincinnati’s German heritage is alive and well, as evident by the countless restaurants in neighborhoods across the city. Want a more festive German celebration? Cincinnati hosts the world’s fourth largest Oktoberfest each year.

While we’re on the topic of food, Findlay Market deserves a mention. This home for dozens of food stalls and farmer’s market events is Ohio’s oldest continuously-operated public market. It is the last market of its kind among the many that once served the citizens of Cincinnati.

Cincinnati is home to seven major sports venues, two major league teams, six minor league teams, and a host of college sports teams. Major League Baseball’s Cincinnati Reds, America’s first professional baseball team, and the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals enjoy much support from their loyal fans. Three professional soccer teams, an ice hockey team, one arena football team and a minor league baseball team also call Cincinnati home. The historic international men’s and women’s tennis tournament, the A.T.P. Masters Series Cincinnati Masters, draws crowds of spectators to the city every year.
