The moving industry was brought center stage on CBS’ Undercover Boss this past Sunday when president and CEO of United Van Lines, Rich McClure went undercover. This episode featured several scenarios where the Undercover Boss gained a first-hand glimpse into the inner workings of his moving company.
The spring through summer months is known as peak season for moving companies. McClure felt this was as good of a time as any to repair any holes that may have existed within his organization. The behind the scenes look at the moving industry reaffirmed moving is hard work, paying attention to detail is paramount and having a great work ethic is the foundation of any good moving company.
McClure, disguised as an actual mover in the first segment, quickly noticed the endurance and stamina required for performing at an optimum pace. His movers proved to be skilled and knowledgeable at achieving a successful move. In another segment he was introduced to a husband and wife team of packers. As the trainee/Undercover Boss, McClure observed again the proficiency of his team members and the need for detail with every move. Their efficiency gained his respect and admiration.
The episode continued with a stop at one of his storage warehouses. There he met a young man responsible for loading and shipping of materials for corporate clients. Unlike the other scenarios, this moving professional was less enthusiastic about his job and showed great signs of immaturity. McClure realized this employee needed more guidance and training. For the final segment he paired his wife with a claims manager from one of their regions. The claims manager was a 28 year veteran in the company and proved to be a valuable asset to a sensitive area.
Needless to say, at the reveal, all of the moving professionals were shocked to discover the identity of their Undercover Boss.
